Version 0.1-draft. Effective [EFFECTIVE DATE: owner to supply].
Greffier is a desktop app that records conversations and writes notes from them on your computer. It is made by Jake Zohdi, sole proprietor, trading as “Greffier” (“Greffier”, “we”, “us”).
The short version: Greffier has no accounts and no telemetry. Your recordings, transcripts and summaries stay on your computer unless you turn on a cloud provider. This page explains what the app keeps, every network call it makes, and what happens when you write to us or visit greffier.app.
On your computer
What Greffier keeps
Greffier keeps your Recordings in its data folder on your computer. On macOS that is ~/Library/Application Support/Greffier. A Recording holds its transcript, summaries, chat, notes, title and tags. The data folder also holds your settings, your scheduled recordings and the speech and summary models Greffier downloads.
API keys for cloud providers and your license key are encrypted with your operating system’s secure storage before they are saved.
Audio
Greffier saves a Recording’s audio only when you turn on Keep raw audio for it. The audio is then saved as a file in the data folder.
Otherwise the audio is not saved. While transcribing on your computer, Greffier may write a short piece of audio to a temporary file, and deletes it as soon as that piece is transcribed.
Daily backups
Greffier keeps 3 daily backups of its database in the data folder, so a damaged database can be restored. The backups hold transcripts, summaries and the rest of the database. They hold no audio.
Deleting a Recording
When you delete a Recording, it is removed from Greffier, together with its kept audio and any export files in Greffier’s data folder. It can remain in the daily backups for up to 3 days, until they are replaced. Files you saved elsewhere with Export are separate copies, and deleting the Recording doesn’t touch them.
The app’s log
Greffier writes a technical log to help find and fix problems. On macOS it is in ~/Library/Logs/Greffier. The log records what the app did and what went wrong. It never contains Recording content, API keys, your license key or your computer’s name.
The log is capped at 5 MiB plus one archive, and an archive older than 30 days is deleted. The log stays on your computer.
No telemetry
The app sends no analytics, usage data or crash reports. Nothing about how you use Greffier is reported to us.
Every network call the app makes
Any request over the internet shows the server your IP address. Apart from that, here is what each call carries.
Update checks. When it starts and about every 4 hours after, Greffier asks update.electronjs.org whether a newer version exists, and downloads it from GitHub, where Greffier’s releases are hosted. The check carries the app’s version, your operating system and your processor type.
The summary-model catalog. Once per launch, Greffier downloads its signed list of recommended summary models from GitHub (raw.githubusercontent.com). The request carries nothing about you.
Model downloads. Greffier downloads the models it runs on your computer:
- Parakeet, the main speech model, from Greffier’s releases on GitHub, at launch until it is on your computer;
- Whisper speech models from Hugging Face: a small English model kept ready as a fallback, and others when a Recording needs them;
- summary models from the Ollama registry, when you install one.
These downloads carry no Recording content.
License checks.
Purchases and license checks will be handled by a payment provider named here before sales open.
Cloud providers, only when you turn them on. Greffier works fully on your computer. You can choose to use these cloud providers instead, with your own account or API key:
- OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google (the Gemini API), for summaries and chat;
- AssemblyAI, for transcription.
You choose cloud summaries, chat and transcription for each Recording. When you do, Greffier sends that provider what the task needs: the transcript and the text needed for a summary or an answer, such as your question, or, for AssemblyAI, the audio as it is recorded.
Once an OpenRouter account is connected, Greffier also checks its key with OpenRouter when you connect it or press Verify, after an OpenRouter error, and at launch while no result is stored. These checks carry no Recording content.
Local connections. Greffier talks to its own summary runtime (Ollama) through an address on your own computer (127.0.0.1). When you connect OpenRouter, the sign-in result comes back to Greffier the same way. These connections don’t leave your computer.
Cloud providers
When you use a cloud provider, what you send it is covered by that provider’s own privacy policy and your agreement with it, not by this one.
OpenRouter. Greffier sets every OpenRouter request to deny data collection, so OpenRouter never routes Greffier’s requests to providers that train on transcripts. That setting doesn’t mean nothing is kept: some providers keep prompts for a while. Each model in Greffier shows its Data policy, including the longest time its host may keep what you send (for example, up to 55 days). OpenRouter also samples a small share of prompts for anonymous categorization. See OpenRouter’s privacy policy.
OpenAI, Anthropic and Google. Models from these providers show their Data policy too. If your Google API key is on Google’s free tier, Google may use what you send to improve its products and models, and people may review it. Greffier can’t tell a free Google key from a paid one. See the privacy policies of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and the Gemini API terms.
AssemblyAI. Audio streams to AssemblyAI under your own key. AssemblyAI’s privacy policy applies.
When you write to us
When you write to support@greffier.app, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. ImprovMX forwards the mail, and it is kept in a Gmail inbox (Google) used only for Greffier support. We use ImprovMX and Google only for support mail. Replies may come from that Gmail address rather than from support@greffier.app.
We use what you send only to answer you and to fix the problem you report.
Payments
Purchases and license checks will be handled by a payment provider named here before sales open.
The website
greffier.app is hosted on Vercel, which processes your IP address to serve the pages. Vercel Analytics counts page visits in aggregate, without cookies. It reports totals, not individual visitors.
The website sets no cookies. The only thing it stores in your browser is your language choice, in localStorage.
If a blog post contains a video, the video loads from its host only when you press play. From then on, that host’s privacy policy applies.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, laws such as the GDPR (in the EU, the EEA and the UK) and the CCPA (in California) give you rights over your personal information. You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it;
- stop or limit how we use it.
Greffier holds no recordings on a server. Your Recordings are on your computer, where you control them. So requests to us mostly concern support mail and, once it exists, the payment provider.
To make a request, write to support@greffier.app. We’ll answer within the time the law allows, and we won’t treat you differently for asking. If you are in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
We don’t sell or share personal information, as the CCPA defines those words.
Under the GDPR, we handle support mail to answer you, and the website’s visitor data to serve the pages and count visits. Both rest on our legitimate interest in doing those things.
Children
Greffier is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to support@greffier.app and we will delete it.
